The Zakynthos Marine Park is divided up into three zones. Zone A prohibits any entry or human activity, while zones B and C permit limited access.
The entire park comprises an area stretching over 50 miles from Zakynthos itself, including a pair of remote islets.
While protecting the sea turtles is of crucial importance, the reserve also acts to preserve other sea mammals such as the Monarch seal. It also automatically helps protect coastal flora including the beautiful and highly endangered Pancratium maritinum, also known as the Sea daffodil which was once common in Greece but now is found in only a few areas.
While the protections are clearly established, there is a constant threat to the marine park from illegal building and boating activities which ignore the guidelines. But despite these problems, it is estimated that about 60,000 sea turtle babies were successfully hatched on Zakynthos beaches in 2009. While the mortality rate for the little turtles is incredibly high, it's hoped that at least a few of them will survive the 20 or so years it takes to reach sexual maturity and being breeding.
