Explore the Greek Islands

Join me for a look at some of the cruise and tour packages available this year in Greece.

Cruise providers are listed in alphabetical order.

Brendan Tours is offering several low-price Greece packages, generally excluding airfare, however. Brendan focuses on the more-independent traveler, so the schedule is generally less frenetic, with time for your own exploring. They also have add-on modules which can extend or enhance a vacation.

Celebrity Cruises is offering an 11-night Mediterranean getaway which includes a nice selection of Greek ports. Prices start at about US $1150 per person for an inside cabin you may not prefer; mid-range cabins with ocean views are about $1200 plus various fees.

Okay, it's not a cruise, but it's definitely a getaway. Club Med has long been renowned for offering planned inclusive vacations, and this members-only organization has several locations in Greece. Club Med Corfou Ipsos offers a friendly village experience with optional excursions available. No kids - guests must be 18. Another village is at Kalamata and a third is on the island of Kos (Cos). Note - Some American reps of Club Med are not aware of the Greek villages, and they may not be on all lists.

From Crystal Cruises, the Crystal Symphony, an ultra-deluxe ship, makes a number of Athens stops in late summer including a new 6-day trip from Venice to Athens.

While none of the Crystal Cruises really do Greece in depth, if you are considering a splurge before or after your Greek idyll, you may want to consider the Symphony cruises through Europe, or their reasonably-priced Athens to Rome cruise in September. Also check their Specials page.

Want to do it yourself, or with the assistance of a licensed captain and/or crew? Check out the bareboat and other charter options from Fyly Yachting. Nothing beats the sense of freedom of letting your whim and favorable winds choose your next landfall. Fyly specializes in revealing "unknown" islands to their clients. Amoulianoi, anyone?

Norwegian Cruise Lines - Mediterranean

This cruise line is offering trips through the Mediterranean, including some Greek stops.

There are plenty of Greek Island offerings from Orient Lines, a well-respected line.

Poseidon Adventure Cruises offers unique small-yacht cruises starting at about $150 per person per day; discounts bring down the price even more. If you like smaller vessels, this is a great way to experience Greece in a way the big cruise ships just can't offer. Like the looks of this cove instead of that one? Captain, take us there! Participants also have the option of joining in the sailing of the boats.

A more Greece-oriented offering is the Classical Aegean which visits Turkey, Rhodes, Santorini, Delos-Mykonos, Piraeus, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nauplia, Osios Loukas, Delphi and Athens. Some locations are reached by coach.

Orient also offers the Turkey, Greece and the Adriatic CruiseTour with stops at Turkey, Piraeus, Delos, Mykonos, Santorini, Kithira and Katakolon for Olympia. There are a number of other tours with Greece stops, so check their website. Prices this season are as low as $1295 per person for early booking.

High-luxury Princess Cruises is offering some cruises with Greek stops, though with this line, you travel as much for the ship as you do the destination. If you like all of your ancient culture in one go, try their 10-day Athens/Rome and Egypt cruise.

The Seabourn Cruise Line is offering a number of seven-day cruises between Athens and Istanbul, including various Greek ports. This line is consistently well-reviewed, offering small ships and deluxe service. This is not a choice for the budget-conscious - a recent seven-day cruise on the 208-passenger "mega yacht" the Seabourn Spirit on a special discount date ran nearly $4000 per person. But -that's for an outside suite with living room and bedroom with a walk-in closet - in all, about 277 square feet of space. For those looking to enjoy an exceptional at-sea experience, this is worth serious consideration.

Tauck Tours offers tours of Greece. If their tours are as well-designed and inclusive as their website, we have nothing to worry about. The 10-day Wonders of Greece offers a look at the "Nymph of the Thermaic Gulf" - more commonly known as Thessaloniki, and then continues south through Greece, ending in Athens.
