The Bottom Line

This can be an interesting alternative to traditional tours, but may not be right if luxury or personal service are important to you.
Pros
  • An unusual way to experience Greece based in one spot.
  • Lodging and airfare combinations make for attractive prices.
  • Company devotes its profits to worldwide charities.
  • Available year-round in Greece.
Cons
  • No meals or maid services provided.
  • Apartment-based life may get to feel a little too much like home.
  • Prices may not be that competitive with many traditional tours or cruise.
  • Two-week stay required.
  • Apartments are not handicapped or mobility-challenged friendly.

Description

  • Company says its average client is in their 50s and 60s.
  • They suggest costs can be cut by using the kitchen for two meals a day, but this can be pricier than it appears.
  • Looking for pampering? Prepare to pamper yourself rather than have someone else do it.

Guide Review - Tour Operator: Untours

Untours, previously known as Idyll, offers apartment-based trips to Greece. Most people choose the full version, which combines airfare, a car rental, and the apartment rental for one package price, which can work out to be as low as about US $100 per person per day in the off-season.

They also offer a ground-only version which omits the airfare, but includes the car and apartment.

The big benefit of experiencing Greece in this way is that you come close to living like a local, surrounded by other Greeks, doing your own marketing, and achieving a higher degree of assimilation than you could ever get at an all-inclusive resort village.

The downside is that you pay about standard hotel rates, but you don't get amenities such as maid service, air conditioning, or coddling at the front desk. But you may not get this at your regular hotel, either, of course!

If you don't do your own cooking, you may find some of the savings vanish.

Depending on the time of the year, the included airfare is what can make this a true bargain experience since that is the big ticket item for most travelers to Greece unless you are addicted to top quality luxury hotels.

A test quote for April 23, 2007, returned a price of US $2379 per person for two people, including airfare through Untours. A flight check on a major international carrier (Delta) turned up a round-trip economy fare for that period of US $1346.34, including taxes and fees.

If prices per plane ticket are in this range for your time period, this could be a great deal.
