Plagued in the past by a poor water supply which made maintaining the greens difficult, the course was temporarily closed while the new owners extensively reconditioned the soil and replanted the course. They also installed a state-of-the-art irrigation system and a computerized on-site weather station. Although located in Northern Greece, the Sithonia peninsula enjoys a favorable microclimate and the course is open year-round.
The Porto Carras Grand Resort consists of four deluxe hotels and a casino, augmented by a large marina and extensive meeting facilities. The complex regularly hosts international conferences; recent events hosted here include the 2003 European Summit. It also offers a a full spa center which serve the guests of the various hotels. Golfers may get enough of sand in the strategically-placed bunkers on the course, but if not, the beach alongside the resort extends for over three miles with over twenty-five small, private bays for sunbathing and watersports.
