The Crete Golf Club

By deTraci Regula, About.com

Opened in July of 2003, this Bob Hunt-designed golf course is about fourteen miles east of the Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport at Heraklion on the E75 New National Road. A German and English-speaking golf pro is on site, and the clubhouse offers a bar and restaurant. It also has hosted the first three Aegean Airlines Pro-Am Golf Tournaments held in early summer and is likely to host more.

A New Era for Greek Golf?

Developed by a group of local hoteliers, the course is said to be meticulously maintained and aims to please the experienced international golfer. It is an exceptionally beautiful course, providing vistas of the rugged mountains of Crete on the back nine, and then shifting to views of the deep blue Aegean sea.

Even in high summer, players enjoy the fresh coastal breezes rippling across the fragrant hillsides, and native olive and carob trees offer picturesque hazards. The stony mountain views contrasting with the green grass reminds some golfers of the desert courses at Palm Springs, California; the desert-style course may also prove to be a good match with the Greek sunlight, which historically has made it hard to maintain Grecian greens in summertime.

Walk it or Cart it - Your Choice

This course can be walked or players can rent a golf cart. No clubs? No problem - the club offers rentals of everything except golfing shoes, and those are available at the well-stocked pro shop at the course.

Expert Praise for the Crete Golf Club

From the Crete Golf Club brochure: "The Crete Golf club is a marvelous new addition to Europe's rich reservoir of courses and I have no doubt that it will soon be regarded as one of the finest tests in the whole of the southern Mediterranean." Colin Callander, Editor, Golf Monthly 1990 - 2000.
