Durrell School

By deTraci Regula, About.com

The Durrell School:
Writers and brothers Lawrence and Gerald Durrell are intimately associated with Greece, where both of them lived and worked. The Durrell School offers courses giving a unique perspective on Greece and the surrounding region, exploring literature, the nature of creativity, and many other subjects in its annual curriculum.

Courses are open to all and are held at their facility on the Greek island of Corfu (Kerkyra), which inspired Lawrence Durrell to write "Prospero's Cell", an account of his time on the island in the 1930s.

Workshops are led by renowned experts in their fields. Writer Nicholas Gage (Eleni) led one field program to his home village of Lia on the Greek mainland.

At present, the Durrell School is calling for papers for its September, 2006 seminar on "Tradition and Change in Rural Society".
