Sofitel Capsis Hotel, Rhodes

About.com Rating 2.5

By deTraci Regula, About.com

The Bottom Line
While touting itself as a true luxury experience, this hotel falls short of its goal and doesn't match the usual standard of excellence for the Sofitel chain.
Pros
  • Pleasant location an 8-euro taxi from the airport
  • Big swimming pool
  • Large hotel with plenty of rooms
Cons
  • Caters to large groups and conventions; individuals can get lost
  • Attention to detail needs improvement
Description
  • 3 restaurants, 4 bars, 3 swimming pools, shops, open-air show theatre
  • The Sofitel Capsis is the largest resort convention center hotel in Greece.
  • 691 rooms total.
  • A raised metal track for the sliding glass door onto the balcony provided me with a dramatic moment when I tripped over it.
Guide Review - Sofitel Capsis Hotel, Rhodes
Note: This hotel is no longer part of the Sofitel chain I stayed as an anonymous, full-paying guest at this hotel in October of 2005. While it's an acceptable experience, it was not the pleasant embrace I've experienced with other Sofitel hotels and luxury hotels in general. For a price of just under US $200 a night for a single, I expected more.

On my visit, I arrived at about 11pm and paid my taxi. The entrance to the hotel was blocked by a number of people, apparently employees. There was no doorman or anyone who moved to help me either open the door or bring in my bag. I had to shoulder my way through the crowd to reach the empty lobby. I commented on this situation to the desk clerk, who told me that they had a large group leaving at that moment and so all available employees were assisting them; he had no comment on the apparently available employees blocking their own entrance who could not be troubled to open a door. However, he did volunteer to bring my bags up to my room for me, which I gratefully accepted.

The room was nicely furnished and included complimentary bottles of Greek water, a bottle of wine and an array of fruit - some of which was unfortunately moldy. In the morning, there was an abundant breakfast buffet spread in the cavernous dining area. I was admittedly an early bird, but some of the foods offered were still cold from the refrigerator or not even fully cooked, including potatoes so underdone as to be inedible. The good news? There was a large enough variety of foods to make a good enough breakfast anyway.

While I hold out hope that I just hit them on a bad night, I'd hesitate to book here again to find out.
