Top 5 Digital Cameras for your Trip to Greece

By , About.com Guide

Greece loves to pose and you'll have no shortage of great Greek island sunsets, dramatic marble columns, and smiling Greek faces to capture in your digital circuitry. But that won't help unless you have a camera handy in the first place. Below you'll find a few possibilities for your trip to Greece.

Camera accessories I find worthwhile for Greece include extra batteries. If you lose or can't use your charger when traveling, you'll be glad you have them. Also, attachable lens shades and viewfinder/screen eyepieces will help you better cope with the amazing brightness of Greek light.

1. Pentax Optio W30

I bought an earlier incarnation of this camera two days before a trip, on the afternoon of the day I'd dropped off my "real" camera at the repair shop. It was an emergency choice dictated by price and the fact it took SD cards which I already had on hand. But I've never regretted it; its image circuitry is better than many more expensive cameras and you get more out of your megapixel that way. It also takes SDHC cards, both of which are readily available in Greece. This series has good sensitivity in low light, even when shooting by candlelight. Uses AA batteries but can be picky with foreign ones - bring extra.

2. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W90 Silver Digital Camera

Easy-to-handle case and a nice firm feel makes this a great camera to use as a point-and-shoot. While it has some bells and whistles on it for the more experienced photographer, its good but limited optical zoom makes this a good backpack camera to have with you always. But if you're tempted by the separate low-priced waterproof casing, don't be. I had a properly-configured one fail well within its supposed range, so keep this one out of the water. Can take low-res video as well.

3. Canon Eos Rebel XTi Black SLR Digital Camera Kit

Note that this "Kit" means that it comes with a lens, not always the case with the higher-end Canon offerings. This one is a fun, serious camera which can either be dumbed down a bit to almost point-and-shoot convenience, or put on all manual settings to please the more demanding and experienced photographer. It looks like you're serious about quality still photos and you'd better be - there is no video function.

4. EOS 5D Digital SLR

This is the dream-on-it choice for most - top of the line Canon EOS 5D offering 12.8 megapixels. The lenses are sold separately for considerably extra, but the massive megapixels and Canon lenses make for a combination that you could make crystal-clear wallpaper-size images from - and I'm not talking about the wallpaper on your computer. Much more camera than you may need for Greece unless you're a wannabe pro looking for a new trip toy.

5. Disposable Film Cameras

I've linked to one type here which I have actually used with good results, but I'm mainly including them here to caution you when buying them in Greece. Grabbing a cheap disposable film camera used to be my back-up position, but I've had too many poor results from old, damaged film. If you must buy one in Greece, be ready to pay up to US $20. Be sure to check the expiration date on the box, and try to guess if it has been exposed too long to sun or heat before reaching you. However, the underwater versions of disposable film cameras usually do an adequate job, possibly because of the better casing around the film.
