From Curtis Daly, for About.com

From the ship, the island of Ios looks small (and is small), dotted by little white squares and sand colored rocks. I think the most appropriate metaphor that I can apply to my experience on Ios is that of Pinocchio’s island adventure. Our inability to grow donkey ears was the only difference and smoking cigars and drinking was just the tip of the iceberg. It was a time and place where hedonism reigned supreme.

A day ended long after the next had started and sleep was as inconvenient as a dentist appointment; sandwiched somewhere between 9am and 11am. Breakfast was at lunch, lunch at dinner and everything else followed accordingly. In between meals and drinking, you could enjoy the water park, go dirt biking, play an improvised game of Olympic basketball, lounge at the pool or bask in the bath water sea, floating as you did when you were a pot-bellied adolescent.

The clubs sprang to life late in the evening or rather early in the morning. Your scene preference became wherever you were that night because it all blended perfectly. The energy from bar to club was high without an ounce of let down. This island was no overblown rave though, this was a rotating collection of peaceful souls, arriving on one boat and leaving on another.

This rock island provided the most fertile ground for friendship and love, however fleeting The last 24 hours I spent there encapsulated the island experience perfectly. Keeping with an aforementioned tradition, after a night of partying, I sauntered (stumbled) back to my bungalow sometime around 10am. The sun was already working to put a sweat on my brow but the fact that I was somehow shirtless provided some relief.

Arriving at my destination, I made my way through the hotel’s swinging saloon doors, up the spiral staircase and into my 100 square foot room, rinsed off in the combo shower-toilet and fell down for a nice long 90 minute sleep. There was never any alarm clock but something innate always awoke me. There’s an energy that my body could not shake. No matter how tired I was or how long I’d been up, I never needed anymore than two hours to restart my motor. Of course it may have been the three Red Bulls and Vodkas I’d have shortly after awakening but I prefer to think it was something more primal.

After a hardy breakfast of bread and cheese, my friends and I made our way down the hill to the beach bar and quickly synced back up with the throng of Israelis that took us in some three days earlier. A new girl had joined their group and shortly into our conversation, informed me that I was “hers” for the remainder of my stay on the island.

The rest of the daylight hours played out as follows: drink, dip in the pool, drink, dry out, drink, play basketball, drink, take a Banana Boat ride, repeat. This was pretty much the routine for all of the island guests, give or take an extra drink.

Near 8pm, the sun was setting and it was time to ready ourselves for the evening. We sputtered back up the hill on our motor bikes with more than the maximum capacity of passengers aboard; first gear all the way with bald, cracked tired scraping worn mud flaps.

The transformation from day attire to night was negligible. Swim trunks to Bermuda shorts, tank tops to t-shirts, flip flops to Adidas and gel took the place of salt water in shaping my hair.
