Olympic Tickets are selling at last

The organizers of the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games are starting to breathe easier, despite the heat and humidity lying over the capital this week. Greeks, notorious last-minute purchasers, are stepping forward in droves to buy seats at any competition featuring a Greek athlete and at many other events as well. This is despite scandals rocking the Greek sporting world as drug use allegations look to scuttle the careers of several Greek athletes.

Some observers say that many Greeks were thinking that low ticket sales would result in tickets being distributed for free, something ATHOC has had to repeatedly deny.

While pre-Games ticket sales were alarmingly slow, it now looks as if they will exceed the 3.5 million which is the figure most often cited as the bench mark for success in this area of the Olympic Games.

Foreign visitors, some encouraged by the quiet, smooth operation of the first week of the Games in Athens, are also arriving and snapping up tickets. Top events are sold out and even more minor events are beginning to gather more spectators as visitors decide to take almost any ticket available.
