Fires in Greece
What Causes Fires in Greece?

The summer fire season in Greece is unfortunately underway. This year, 2008, a raging wildfire on the Greek island of Rhodes burned for days before finally being extinguished. The fate of Rhodes' modern icon, a rare variety of deer, is still being investigated as the fires devastated one of their last habitats.

Other fires burned on Mt. Hymettus outside of Athens and in many other places throughout Greece. The main highway between Athens and Thessaloniki was temporarily closed due to smoke from fires obscuring the road.

Fires in Greece are increasingly dominating the headlines each summer. The naturally dry climate in Greece combined with record high temperatures has made fires in Greece an increasingly common occurence.

Even the once-green forested island of Samos and seaside resorts in Greece have been evacuated due to fires burning from the hillsides straight down to the shore. While tourist casualties have been few, they have occurred when travelers have been unexpectedly overtaken by flames.
