Vangelis

By deTraci Regula, About.com

Vangelis is probably Greece's best known composer - at least, outside of Greece. Find Vangelis' inspiring music here.

1. Mythodea

This new DVD edition of the classic Vangelis work has been recently released by Sony Classical Music. It features the London Metropolitan Orchestra, Kathleen Battle, and Jessye Norman. Other participating musicians include the Greek National Opera, the Seistron Ensemble, and the Tympana Ensemble. It even has a touch of the divine as it was recorded at the Temple of the Olympian Zeus in Athens and evokes Ares. It was selected as the "soundtrack" for the NASA Mission to Mars.

2. Chariots of Fire - The 25th Anniversary Edition

Vangelis first burst on the scene with his soundtrack for the movie "Chariots of Fire", and the theme is still used in countless ways, either for sporting events or, sometimes, as satirical background for sports in comedies. Whenever I hear it, even if the effect is supposed to be funny, it makes me tingle.

3. Vangelis - The Collection

This 3-disk CD set is a great deal on Vangelis' work, including the full albums "Freefall," "Alpha," and "Spiral."
