Archaeological Museum of Piraeus

Fascinating collection of local antiquities

By , About.com Guide

This enjoyable museum in Piraeus boasts a dramatic collection of greater-than-life size bronzes that rival those in the "big" Archaeological Museum of Athens. The two images of Artemis are particularly striking, and well worth a look. There is also the foundations and remaining damaged statuary from a small temple of the Mother of the Gods, along with numerous marble grave stelae and many other objects. Outside, there is the small ancient theater of Zea, surrounded with some additional fragments of ancient marbles.

Since this museum is rarely crowded, you can take your time appreciating these statues. Look at them long enough and you'll swear they are just about to move off of their pedestals. Most of the objects were found in and around Piraeus. From most parts of Piraeus, it's a reasonably pleasant walk with mild uphill stretches.
