The Historical Museum of Crete is often missed by visitors, but is well worth a visit. Located within walking distance of its better-known colleague, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, this well-curated collection can easily occupy an hour or two.
Collections at the Historical Museum
The Historical Museum picks up where the Archaeological Museum leaves off. It begins with the late Roman and Byzantine era and continues up through the 20th century. Collections include:
- The Medieval and Renaissance Collection
You'll find everything from icons to tombstones displayed with coins, armor, and jewelry. Virtually every item is described in both Greek and English. - Collectipn of the Struggle for Independence
Find out about Cretan rebel leaders, the short-lived Independent Cretan State, and other artifacts from this turbulent time in Cretan history. - Folk Arts Collection
This is my personal favorite, a vast selection of Cretan embroideries, weavings, wood carvings, and basketry. - Nikos Kazantzakis Room
If you haven't made a direct acquaintance with this literary giant, standing in this recreation of one of his writing rooms is a good place to start. Reading "Zorba the Greek" or "Report to Greco" is the next step. - A.G. Kalokerinos Room
Discover Crete under the Venetians. Don't miss the huge model of Heraklion (then known as Candia) and its interactive lighting display; it may even help you get around modern Heraklion. - Ceramics Room
Cretan ceramics did not end with Minoan octopus pots. Enjoy looking at Byzantine, Venetian, Arabic and Ottoman pieces.
