Crete "Candia"
Photographed by deTraci Regula from . Des Osmanischen Reichs Greichenland &die Junischen Inseln,1845
Crete is the largest Greek island and has been called by many names. The most renowned is "Candia", which also gave its name to the sea north of Crete, known as the "Candian" sea during this time period. In more recent times, it's called the Cretan Sea. At the time this map was made in 1845, Crete was still part of the Ottoman Empire though most of Greece had won independence in 1829.
