An Architect Turns Underworld Oracle

The Oracle of Trophonius at Levadia

The Oracle of Trophonius at Levadia

From the Dictionary of Antiquities.
Trophonius and his brother Agamedes were criminal architects who built a treasure vault with a loose stone so that they could return and seize the treasure for themselves. They were discovered, Agamedes was beheaded, some say by his own brother, and Trophonius himself fled. But suddenly, at a sacred grove growing at Lebadia, the earth opened up and he vanished. Later, a swarm of bees led visitors to the spot, where Trophonius apparently works off his crime by performing as an oracle.

Some sources state that the oracle originally belonged to Zeus.

In modern times, Lebadia for most visitors is reduced to being just the site of a tour-bus rest stop on the journey to the still well-known oracle of Delphi, a far cry from its ancient historical importance.

But the oracle still draws a few visitors, and the sacred Erkina river, once considered to be the local Styx, or river of the dead, flows through the center of the town. Nearby, the source of the Erkina, the springs of Lethe and Mnemosyne, forgetfulness and memory, still flow.
