Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, Attica

deTraci Regula
Definition: Attica - the name given to the southern portion of the Greek peninsula which is home to Athens, the capital of Greece. It is a long, wide finger of land, forested in ancient times but relatively barren today. Much of ancient Greek history took place in Attica, where Athens is located. It is also home to the Plain of Marathon, Cape Sounion, Eleusis, and many other renowned ancient sites. There are a number of islands along the Attica coast, including Salamis and Macronissos. Attica is served by three major ports - Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrion.

Do not confuse with Attica, New York, USA, the site of a notorious prison riot.

Pronunciation: AT-ih-cah

Examples: When visiting Athens, be sure to explore the rest of the countryside of Attica.
