Vacation Rentals in Greece
Are they reliable and a good idea for travelers?

By deTraci Regula, About.com

From the About Greece mailbox:

Dear Guide,
My husband and I will be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary in October of 2010. He has wanted to go to Greece his whole life, so we have decided that is where we would like to go. We would like to rent a small cottage or apartment since it is much more cost effective than staying in a hotel. Plus, we traditionally don't go on vacation for the hotel, we go for the scenery, the people and the experience of the places we visit. We have found many such rentals available on the web, but how do you know whether or not the places are reputable? In most cases, they require a third down to hold the reservation and the balance due at least 2 months before you get there. Most do not take credit cards, so you have no recourse should something go wrong with the plan.

Just wondering if you have any suggestions. We will travel there in October of 2010 and plan to stay at least two weeks.

SB

Dear SB,
I understand and, to a degree, share your concerns about the process of a cottage rental in Greece . However, I almost never hear of any problems at all with this type of vacation rental in Greece. But I would take advantage of the question-answer process with the owners and try to get a feeling about the particular property you are interested in.

Also, many of these properties in my experience are "named" "Sophia's Villas" or similar so a Google search may turn up some additional information and possible complaints. You may also be able to request testimonials, and even though they may be carefully vetted beforehand, it is still amazing what you can sometimes find out that way.

However, on another subject, if you are trying to really experience Greece in two weeks, that seems hard to do from one central location no matter how delightful it is. Also, with an October departure, you are traveling after the ferry and other Greek transportation schedules shift to the less-frequent fall schedules, which may also make it a little more difficult to get around. In any case, I would try to be in Greece during the first two weeks of October rather than the last two weeks, as the weather in Greec e starts to change about mid-October, getting cooler and sometimes wetter.

Best,
deTraci Regula
