Mosquito Repellents for Greece

Once just annoying, West Nile Virus makes mosquitoes a threat to your holiday.

By , About.com Guide

Just about every warm country has mosquitoes, and Greece is no exception. An outbreak of West Nile virus in Greece in the summer of 2010 has both residents and visitors to Greece concerned. Since outbreaks of mosquito-borne viruses tend to mean the stores are quickly stripped of mosquito repellents, you may want to bring your own with you just in case. Here are some mosquito products you can order on-line before your trip to Greece.

1. Battery-operated Mosquito Repellent

I recently tested a similar product and found that by clipping the unit onto my waistband, it offered mindless, thorough protection in a very infested area. This one operates on the same principle. It would be ideal to have with you on your balcony as you sit drinking a glass of good Greek wine and watching the sunset over the nearby river... or even as a just-in-case companion for your dinner at that pretty open-air taverna in the town square.

2. Sunbeam Personal Electronic Mosquito Repellers 3-Pack

Protecting your family from mosquitoes in Greece? This three-pack of battery-opeated personal mosquito repellents may be just the thing. The personal units are ideal for small children who may not be old enough to realize it is time to reapply repellent.

3. Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent Towelettes

I love to be organic. Except in insect repellents. Off! contains a high percentage of DEET, which is effective at keeping insects away. I am just not that sure about all of the wonderful all-natural substances... but feel free to educate me if you've found one that really works in all conditions.

4. Don't Bite Me Natural Repellent Adhesive patch

Admittedly, I'm in favor of chemical warfare against disease-carrying mosquitos. But it's tricky when you're trying to protect your children, who may be even more sensitive to the side effects of chemical insecticides. This adhesive patch uses Vitamin B1 to ward off biting insects of all kinds. It lasts up to 36 hours and can be attached to any hairless area of the body, including the back, which can help with active kids who might peel off a patch on their arms or legs.
