Greece - Festivals in January

Though January is the heart of winter in Greece, there's no shortage of festivals, feasts, and other events for the traveler to Greece to enjoy.

1. January 1

New Year's Day in Greece, sometimes called Western New Year's Day. It's the feast of Saint Basil the Great
Widely celebrated everywhere. Some renowned observances are:

  • Plaki - Customs from Farasson in Cappadocia
  • Emborio Eordaias near Kozani - traditional music and dance
  • Polikasro near Kilkis - costumed folklore presentations

Epiphany celebrations- observed widely at the seaside or by lakes and streams throughout Greece.
  • Piraeus outside of Athens - Traditional diving for the cross
  • Kozani - Lougatsaria and Karnavalia celebrations
  • Kastoria - Ragoutsiaria (January 6th - 8th )
January 6th is also the Name Day for Fotini

7. January 7

Feast of St. John the Baptist
Katarini (Katafigion) - Prodomition observance

8. January 8

Gynokratia or "Day of the Midwives" where male and female roles are exchanged for the day. Observed at many towns; here are some of them:

  • Seres - Monoklissia and Nea Petra - exchange of male and female roles
  • Seres - Strimi, Zilagani, Nea Kassani - exchange of male and female roles
  • At the village of Aspro near Kilkis - exchange of male and female roles
