This is one of the few places where you can get a sense of what a complete temple looked like, with all of its columns and interior walls. Be sure to look up to see the way the ceilings were designed and decorated. It was thought to honor Theseus, so it became known in more modern times as the Thission, which gave its name to the district of Thissio. Now Thissio is something of a traveler's secret - cheaper food and even souvenir prices than the Plaka area which is only a short walk away. In summer, there are often free concerts sponsored by the City of Athens at a stage adjacent to the Hephaistion, which is lit up at night. However, the temple can usually only be reached through the Roman Agora entrance. Smart travelers will buy a combination ticket which gives a discount on visiting the Roman Agora, the Acropolis, the New Acropolis Museum, and other sites.
