Previously, filming at the location was considered disrespectful but the authorities were convinced that this tale of a hapless tour guide in Greece (Vardalos) would be good for tourism in Greece, and so they allowed the movie producers to use the Parthenon as a location. Vardalos' reputation as the writer and star of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" doubtless had some influence.
