Kynodontas - Dogtooth

By deTraci Regula, About.com

Yorgo Lanthimos' film "Kynodontas" or, in English, "Dogtooth" is a tale about two children and their hyper-controlling parents who literally create a separate world for them to live in. It's a bit reminiscent of "The Truman Show" in that sense.

The film won took first honors in the "Un certain regard" category at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. Lanthimos co-wrote the film with Efthymis Filippou.

The title refers to the canine teeth, not flowers. The parents say the "kynodontas" must fall out before the children can leave the bizarre safety of their home. Of course, canine teeth are permanent teeth.

Kynodontas stars Anna Kalaitzidou, Aggeliki Papoulia, Hristos Passalis, Christos Stergioglou, Mary Tsoni, and Michelle Valley.
