International Women's Festival of Eressos

By , About.com Guide

The annual International Women's Festival held at Eressos on the Greek island of Lesvos (Lesbos) and now enters its twelth year of operation. The festival is open to all women but it attracts a great many gay women to it, who celebrate the birthplace and homeland of Sappho. Sappho was one of antiquity's greatest poets, called by Plato the "Tenth Muse"; some of her poetry speaks of the beauty and loveliness of women, and it is generally believed that she was the world's first widely-known lesbian writer.

The festival is held each year in September at Skala Eressos. In 2012, the festival runs from September 8th through September 22th, offering music, dance, parties, presentations, and much more. Initially opposed by local residents of Lesvos, the growing festival has since been embraced by the community and is now an essential part of the calendar.
