Egnatia Horse Marathon

A race with a revelation

By deTraci Regula, About.com

The Egnatia Horse Marathon held at Lake Koronia in Northeastern Greece just outside of Thessaloniki is an unusual attempt by locals to showcase not the fast ponies, but the fast decaying environment of the lake.

By holding this event, expected to draw over 100 riders, the organizers hope that more people will realize how troubled and poluuted the lake environment is and gain support for efforts to clean up the lake. It's a major breeding ground for migratory birds, and it has been hit by massive mysterious bird deaths on at least two occasions.

2008 marks the fifth year of the event which draws spectators, horse lovers, and environmentalists from all over Greece. It's hosted by Langada local authority, the ministry of Macedonia-Thrace and the Hellenic Equestrian Federation.

In 2008, the event is being held on the weekend of May 3-4th.
