Usually there is also an evening patrol, knocking down sandcastles and removing obstacles which can block the sea turtles from reaching the dry sandy areas where they can lay their eggs. Clearing the beach sometimes includes collecting and stacking sunbeds.
At Katelios, there is an environmental center where visitors come to see displays about turtles and Kefalonian nature in general. In August, a small environmental festival takes place for a day or two in Katelios. The main night's event is usually a 'sea turtle play'. The turtle nesting period and public relations efforts run from the end of May through the beginning of October.
