Top 10 Foods and Drinks from Greece

By deTraci Regula, About.com

What do you miss most about Greece? Here's a way to feed your Grecian heart and soul with foods, beverages, and other gifts from Hellas.

1. Grecian Olive Oil from Tassos

Healthy, tasty olive oils are the basis of much of Greek cooking - but they can also be used in Asian stir-frying, as a substitute for butter, and much more. Or - try it as a hair conditioner, massage oil, or use it to fill up that ornamental oil lamp.

2. Baklava

Some say that this honey-soaked dessert is also an aphrodisiac. Aphrodite isn't saying, but this popular sweet ships well and can brighten any occasion.

3. Greek Cheese Assortments

Kasseri, Myzithra, familiar Feta - scroll down to choose a great Greek cheese, perfect for cooking, snacking, and enjoying as a delicious reminder of Greece anytime.

4. Greek Wines - Naoussa Red

A classic, reasonably priced Greek red table wine, expertly blended by this fourth-generation winemaking family. Goes well with most Greek main dishes and appetizers.

5. Stuffed Grape Leaves

A great instant appetizer for unexpected guests, or enjoy them as a quick, easy snack anytime. Tasty and healthy, pleasing everyone including kids, vegetarians, and gourmets.

6. Orino Honey from Crete

Morning. I wake up. I realize, with horror, that I'm no longer on Crete. I stagger out to the kitchen. A spoonful of Orino honey with mixed nuts gives me the strength to carry on. Even if you don't like honey, this one is so special you won't be able to resist it. Light, mystically flavorful, sweet but never cloying, a true food of the gods. Now if I could just find genuine thick Cretan yogurt to dribble it over! Excellent prices from this vendor - my local shop charges me twice as much.

7. Greek Olives

Several types of delicious olives, including one of my favorites - dried olives in oil.

8. Loumidis Greek Coffee

This pure, strong Greek coffee is a delicious pick-me-up. Just don't drink the grounds - and don't call it Turkish.

9. Mavrodaphne Wine from Achaia Clauss

This ancient sweet wine is not for everyone, but it's my personal favorite and I'm thrilled to find it online. I've had it from virtually every winery making it in Greece, but Achaia Clauss was my first experience with it and I'm still (somewhat...) faithful to it. If you like dessert wines or port, you will love this wine infused with the mysterious magic of many ancient evenings. To me, this wine is the color Homer meant when he wrote of the "wine-dark sea".

10. Boutari Kretikos Wine

This white wine from Greece's largest vintner from their vineyards on the winemaking island of Crete is a pleasant, non-resinated Greek wine which goes nicely with many dishes.
