There is also a border-crossing stop in "The Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia" (F.Y.R.O.M), which takes you to the heart of the controversial modern name dispute on where the borders of Alexander's "Macedonia" really lie.

This trip offers another plus - you can choose to fly in and out of Thessaloniki, firmly rooting you in Northern Greece for this trip. It would also be easy to combine this journey with a visit to Mount Athos, more of the Northern Aegean islands, and even Turkey if you were so inclined.
