Take the main coastal road west, turning south near Kissamos/Kastelli. Signs should indicate Kaloudiana or Elos, all located to the south.
Traffic along the coast road can be heavy, especially in July and August, so allow plenty of time.
The road will go east briefly, then will turn more directly south as you pass through the village of Kaloudiana. Stay on this road.
You will pass through the village of Topolia and then through a short tunnel. The cave of Saint Sophia is located immediately past the tunnel.
Find a place to park along the road and walk back to the entrance to the footpath.
Admission is free, but bring money for a snack at the aptly-named Panorama Café. And bring a flashlight to explore the deeper recesses of the cave.
If time permits, you can also combine a visit to the cave with a longer drive south to the monastery of Chryssoskalitissas, where a mystical step in a long stairway is said to appear to be made of solid gold to those who ascend it without sin. Or, drive on to the island refuge of Elafonissi, separated from the mainland by a shallow passageway which can usually be waded across with ease.
