By deTraci Regula, About.com Guide

The Dictynna River runs through the bottom of the Gorge, and carved it out from the rock over millions of years.

This little waterfall is present in the Gorge during the early days of spring. Later, water levels may drop.

Toward the top of the Gorge, the river is known as the Dictynna. When it goes underground for a distance, it is known as the Aphaia, or "hidden one". Where it springs up again at Kefalovrysi ("Springhead") it then is knonw as the Britomartis. Dictynna was an ancient Minoan goddess and the Gorge was believed to belong to her. Britomartis was her daughter, first "hidden" in her mother's body, and then springing to life.
