Hotel Poseidon

By , About.com Guide

Hotel Description:
Looking for cheap, convenient lodgings with a touch of style? The Hotel Poseidon is inexpensive and gracious, with many rooms offering a harbor view.
Staffing:
The hotel may be small but the service is not. Well-trained staff feels like you're visiting a much bigger hotel. Whoever is behind the counter will be courteous and concerned. In addition to the low rates, the very competent staffing makes this hotel a definite bargain.
Rates:
Single rooms start at 30 Euro a night, excluding breakfast.
Breakfast:
Breakfast is not included in the low initial rate. Like most such breakfasts at hotels in Greece, it may not feel like that great a deal - six euros for a lonely hard-boiled egg, some bread, jam, coffee, etc. You may want to opt for a cheese or sausage pastry from a bakery instead, but if you have a long day of sightseeing planned, it may be worth it - at least for that first cup of coffee!
Internet Access & Car Rentals:
Phones allow internet access. The in-room per-minute usage rate is relatively low, equivalent to 6 Euros per hour. Need to do a lot of work? You'll do better at the internet cafes in downtown Heraklion. Need a car? Each morning or on request, a local car rental agency stops by to help arrange vehicles. Let the front desk know you want one.
Location:
Located on a bluff overlooking the harbor, the Hotel Poseidon is about midway between the airport and downtown Heraklion. You can walk into the center of town from there, but the road is busy and the sidewalk uneven. A better option is the Number 1 bus, which has a stop two blocks from the hotel and runs both to downtown Heraklion and out to the airport for the low sum of 0.70 Euro. Tickets must be bought in advance at the local kiosks. If your stay is for several days, buy them in advance.
Local Dining:
While there is a deluxe seafood restaurant only steps away, most of the eating places nearby are very basic. While these can be fun to explore, you're better off heading into Heraklion and choosing a taverna there.
Rooms:
The rooms at the Hotel Poseidon are clean, plain, and cheerful. Some single rooms are smaller than average. Double rooms on the corners are your best bet.
Important Tip:
Taxi drivers and locals don't seem to know this hotel very well as it is just outside the downtown area. You may have to give them the telephone number to help them get directions to find it.
