The owner of the Sifis Hotel, Paul Kantounatakis, spent many years in the United States. Along with his Australian-born wife Natalie, they are happy to connect with Americans traveling in Crete. When the restaurant is open for dinner, the meat dishes are excellent and the spit-roasted "gyros" - far, far from the mashed broiled meat that passes for gyros in the States - is hard to resist. The seafood is also excellent. One night offered fresh small fish net-caught by the owner's four-year-old son kneeling along the quay a few feet from the table. Talk about eating local fresh food!
The rooms are clean and pleasant, and many of them offer excellent views of Loutro Bay.

I first experienced the Daskalogiannis as part of a press trip; I've subsequently stayed here as a paying customer.
