Guide Review - Daskalogiannis Hotel
For students of Cretan history, a place to sleep peacefully is oddly named for Daskalogiannis, a rebel leader of the Cretans in their efforts to oust the Ottomans. Daskalogiannis, or "Teacher John", was a sea-faring ancestor of the current owners. He rallied resistance to the occupiers, was given a safe passge to see the Ottoman authorities to negotiate, and instead ended up being flayed alive as an example. This all happened only a couple hundred of years ago, or, for the average Cretan, about the end of last week. You'll note the ferry serving this part of the coast is also named for him.

I first experienced the Daskalogiannis as part of a press trip; I've subsequently stayed here as a paying customer.
