Agia Galini

A Touristy yet Charming Village in Southern Crete

By deTraci Regula, About.com

Where is Agia Galini?
Agia Galini is located on the southern coast of the Greek island of Crete.

Folklore:
Did Icarus and Daedalus really launch themselves from Agia Galini as locals claim? Hard to tell - the municipality was recently criticized for wanting to move two ancient columns from a tourist-inaccessible area to the center of town. Legends may have followed a similar path. But there is a fenced-off shallow "Cave of Daedalus" and the "Point of Icarus and Daedalus" up above the seawall, where the father and son are said to have launched their escape from Crete.

Where to Stay in Agia Galini:
There's no shortage of hotels, apartments, and rooms though in summer it can be crowded. There is also a pleasant campground just outside the town.

Where to eat and drink: There are many tavernas, some with sea views. One boasts a "Thieves' Oven" with meats baked in clay pots - originally, these were said to be buried in the ground and a fire kept going over them, concealing the cooking of someone's missing goat or lamb. The Taverna Medousa offers local specialties in a 100-year-old Cretan stone building.

What to do: Agia Galini is conveniently located for exploring the many attractions of the southern region of Crete. The ancient Roman city of Gortyn and the beautiful Minoan palace of Phaistos can be quickly reached by bus or car.
