Wi-fi isn't everywhere in Greece, and you may have to connect your laptop with a dial-up connection. Here's how.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 60 minutes
Here's How:
- Purchase an internet access card at one of the many kiosks located along the street, or in a small market. Smilenet and Forthnet are both popular.
- If it is your first card, buy the lowest amount possible just in case there is a problem with access.
- Follow the instructions to set up your connection. If these are not in English, go to Control Panel, and choose Set up a New Internet Connection.
- Scratch off the silver backing on the card to reveal your user name and password.
- Enter the indicated phone number for access. If you are calling from a hotel, you will need to add whatever digit they require to access an outside line, usually a "0" or a "9"
- Remember, you will be charged by the hotel for the time you spend on the phone line. The Internet card just covers the internet access fee, not the phone charges. Find out what this rate is to avoid surprises.
Tips:
- Doesn't work? Make sure you didn't type in your usual password and user name combination instead of the new one on the card.
- Still doesn't work? Make sure the number provided on the Internet access card is to a good modem. Call it from your phone. If you hear a modem, you're okay.
- More problems? You may need to check "Disable Waiting for Dial Tone" in your computer. Your computer may not recognize foreign dial tones, and this can help it to work anyway.
- Don't expect high connection speeds. For big volume work, depending on your hotel's phone lines, you may still be better off at an Internet cafe.
