The Peloponnesian town of Patras has been selected to be the "Cultural Capital of Europe" for 2006.

Travelers to the city can expect hundreds of special events, exhibits, festivals and presentations, all designed to show Patras at is best.

Savvy travelers already know Patras as a good example of a "real" Greek city, one still concerned with its thriving wine country, agriculture, and shipping as well its tourists. It's also known for its lively Carnival season and its preservation of ancient Greek shadow theatre performances.

Patras, sometimes referred to as just Patra, is located at the northern coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, not far from the new Rio-Antirio bridgelinking the peninsula to the Greek mainland.
