Heraklion is located on the middle of the northern coast of Crete, Greece's largest island. It's a busy shipping port with an active airport.
Why You Should Go:
If you fly into Crete, or arrive by cruise ship, you will almost invariably go through Iraklio. It's a busy, typical Greek city, with an excellent archaeological museum which showcases the remnants of Minoan civilization. The reconstructed palace of Knossos is only a few minutes by bus from the heart of downtown.
Where to Stay:
Heraklion itself can be a little claustrophobic. You may want to try some of the coastal hotels and resorts just outside of the city itself. But Heraklion has some good budget hotels, such as the Poseidon, if you're looking to save money. Hotels on Crete

The National Road leading east and west from Heraklion is freeway-broad in most areas and is an easy way to explore the coastal towns.
