Growing every year, the official Athens Carnival season begins on Tsiknopempti (Smoke or "Burnt" Thursday), February 19th, 2009.

Various Carnival events will take place over the following ten days, culminating on March 10th, or "Clean Monday". There will be plays, street parties, bands, traditional songs, and other performances in the area around the Acropolis and elsewhere in Athens.

All events are free to the public. Some participants will choose to be in costume, which may be hard for travelers to come up with on short notice, but with a little imagination, anything is possible!
