To benefit from these discounts, you'll generally have to directly purchase a ticket from a counter at the station or from a periptero (kiosk) near the stop so you can show your student ID.
Occasionally, foreign students may have difficulty convincing a ticketperson that their ID is a "real" one. There are also issues with EU-mandated accreditation of foreign universities operating in Greece - if that's a hot topic at the time of your visit, you may find it harder to be allowed to purchase the discounted metro ticket.
