Tower of the Winds
The Tower of the Winds in Athens, Greece

Tower of the Winds

In the public domain.
This octogonal structure built in about 50 BCE shows the eight main gods of the winds. Originally a multi-functional device, it held a water clock called a clepsydra, which kept reasonably accurate time based on the filling of a precisely-measured vessel with water. In this role, the Tower of the Winds was known as the Horologion of Andronicos, after the designer and maker of the water clock. Long lost, a bronze windvane depicting the sea god Triton once perched on top of the tower, rotating as the winds changed.

Since ancient times, the Tower of the Winds has been used for many different purposes. Though it seems relatively small from the outside, its interior is surprisingly roomy. It served as a church for a time. During the Ottoman Occupation, it is said that members of the mystical Sufi sect performed their whirling meditative dances inside of it.

In Greek mythology, Aeolus is the God of Winds, but the most powerful is probably Boreas or Voreas, the god of the powerful winds from the North which includes the summer meltemi which sweeps Greece each year. The other Greek wind gods of the cardinal directions were Zephyrus or Zephyros, the god of the West Wind, Notus or Notis, the god of the South wind, and Eurus, the god of the East Wind.
