A Hub for Transport:
This square is a major transportation hub second only to Syntagma Square itself.
The Working Heart of Athens.:
Omonia Square is lined with city offices and peripteros - the handy kiosks which sell almost anything you could need. Where Syntagma is the more ceremonial, national heart of Athens as a capital city, Omonia is the working heart of the city.
Omonia Square Metro Station:
The Metro provides easy access to and from Omonia Square.
Many Hotels In or Near Omonia:
There are many generally inexpensive hotels plus a few new upscale "boutique hotel" spots in the Omonia Square area. While the streets are usually safe, they are crowded and don't always present the prettiest face of Athens, though this has been improving a bit in recent years. The square itself is lined with some examples of neo-classical architecture contrasting with square-box office buildings.
Focal Point for Vocal Protests:
Like its glitzier sister, Syntagma Square, Omonia Square is often a gathering place for protesters and strikers. The Polytechnic University is not far away and that tends to be a flash point during times of protest.
Omonia Square:
There's no question that Omonia Square is easy to get to and from and accommodations near it are definitely centrally located. If you're looking to use public transportation for your travels in Athens, Omonia provides an excellent base. But if you're looking for a particularly peaceful stay in Athens, you may want to stay closer to the Plaka or Syntagma Square.
