National Gardens

By deTraci Regula, About.com

The National Gardens of Athens, Greece:
This swath of green is broken up by many paths and benches, making it an easy stroll and a good chance to grab some cleaner air and shade, especially during the hot days of summer in Athens.
Keep Eyes Open for Special Events at the National Gardens:
The National Gardens frequently host special markets and other events.
Surprise! It's a Ruin:
There are a number of areas which have a few stones from ancient buildings, most of them from the Roman Era.
Grab a Snack at a Kiosk:
A few kiosks near the entrance of the park offer the usual selection of drinks and snacks, plus the inescapable array of souvenirs.
Enjoying Yourself? Say "Thank You" to Queen Amalia:
Queen Amalia developed the original garden back in 1836. Some of her original plant choices were a bit whimsical for the Athens climate, and gardeners still strive to keep everything thriving.
The Greeks, Once Again, Have a Different Word for It:
In Greek, the National Gardens are called Ethnikos Kipos (the national gardens, or the people's gardens). An old name for the area is the Vasilikos Kipos, "Royal Gardens".
Getting to the National Gardens.:
The Syntagma Metro stations all take you within very easy walking distance of the National Gardens. Entrance is free, though some special events hosted within the park may have separate admissions.
