Discovering Western Attica
Near Athens but a World Away

By , About.com Guide

Ever since the Athens International Airport was opened in Spata, travellers have been streaming through Attica going to and from the airport. Unfortunately, that's about all they've been doing, which is a shame since this region has so much to offer, so close to Athens.

It's easy to get to and yet feels far away from Athens. Discover it now, while prices are almost half of what you'd pay in Athens and many other parts of Greece.

Some of the sights include:

  • The Attica Wine Road
  • Attica Zoological Park
  • Mt. Kitheron, with magnificent views of the Corinthian Gulf and the plains of Boeotia
  • The traditional town of Vilia
  • The 11th-century Byzantine Osios Meletios Monastery
  • 4th Century BCE Oinoi Watchtower
  • 4th Century BCE Aigosthena Fortress
  • 5th century BCE Eleutherai Fortress
  • Porto Germano and the Aigosthena cove, part of the Corinthian Gulf
  • The traditional town of Erythres and the Plateai fortress
