Panathenaic Stadium

By , About.com Guide

The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece was the site of the first modern Olympics in 1896and was also the site of events during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Renowned for its marble construction, it has recently reopened to the public after several years of renovations.

The Panathenaic Stadium is a favorite with visitors interested in ancient and Olympic history and it can be easily reached by foot from the National Gardens off of Syntagma Square. It's also on the Tourist Bus 400 route.

The original stadium dates from 556 bce but it was rebuilt in marble in 396 bce. The original stadium lost most of its stones as builders scavenged the ruins, but enough of the original structure remained for the modern stadium to be built along the same lines.
