The Mediterranean Games started in 1951, after a proposal by the Egyptian Olympic Committee suggested the Mediterranean-only games in 1948. At first, they preceded the Olympic Games by one year, but in 1993, this was changed so that they now follow the summer Olympic Games by one year.
