The next Mediterranean Games will be held in Pescara, Italy in June 26th to July 5th, 2009 . The following Games will be held in Volos/Larissa Greece in 2013; exact dates TBA.

With the increased importance of the European Union, the Mediterranean Games, or Med Games as they are often called, are growing in importance and attendance every year.

Where Will the Mediterranean Games be Held in Greece?

The big Greek beneficiaries will be the smaller cities of Volos and Larissa, as well as the region of Thessaly in general. Visitors can expect substantial expansions of sporting venues and transport systems in those areas, as the Mediterranean Games are likely to attract many visitors.

History of the Mediterranean Games

The Mediterranean Games started in 1951, after a proposal by the Egyptian Olympic Committee suggested the Mediterranean-only games in 1948. At first, they preceded the Olympic Games by one year, but in 1993, this was changed so that they now follow the summer Olympic Games by one year.

Archery, Basketball, Bowls, Boxing, Canoe-Kayak, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Handisports, Judo, Karate, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball & Beach Volleyball, Swimming, Waterpolo, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
