The New Acropolis Museum - Empty Space is its most Controversial Exhibit:
The New Acropolis Muyseum has devoted its top floor to be the home for the Parthenon Marbles when they are returned from their exile in the British Museum - where they are called the "Elgin Marbles" after their rescuer, liberator, or thief, depending on one's point of view.
Where is the New Acropolis Museum?:
The New Acropolis Museum is not on the Acropolis, but at its base on the southeast side. The "old" Acropolis Museum is now closed but is expected to be reopened as a gallery space and possibly a cafe. If you're using the Metro, get off at the Acropolis station. The address is 2-4 Makriyianni Street.
When is the New Acropolis Museum Open?:
Tuesday to Sunday: 8am to 8pm, except for Friday when the museum stays open until 10pm.
Last admission: 7:30pm
Galleries cleared at 7:45 pm.
Budget Hint - Ask for the Combined Ticket:
The New Acropolis Museum is part of the combined ticket available for the Acropolis itself, the Roman Agora, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. If you intend to visit all of these spots, buying the combined ticket will save you several Euro off the individual entry fees.
Museum Fan? You'll Love the Video:
There is a short video at the official website showing the construction of the New Acropolis Museum and the transfer process for some of the larger statues and pieces from the old museum site. If you love museums and their inner workings, as I do, it's well worth a viewing.
Opening Day - Late 2008 - But Check For Preliminary Exhibits:
While some portions of the museum have been temporarily open to visitors, the grand opening was expected to be in September, 2008 but this date was missed. For the time being, an exhibit about the excavations on the museum site itself, "The Museum and the Excavation: Finds from the Site of the New Acropolis Museum" is open; transfer of statuary could interfere with this exhibit at times. It is generally open from 10am to noon.
Visiting the New Acropolis Museum:
If you ever visited the old Acropolis Museum, you saw about 400 choice items found in and around the Acropolis and Parthenon. This new museum will offer about 4000 items, so allow yourself enough extra time to enjoy the multiple floors of the museum.

New Acropolis Museum Website- Select language from the drop-down menu at the right side of the page.
I love the animated people walking around the floors of the museum homepage, but it took me a minute to realize that clicking on their "thought" bubbles wouldn't take me to the page they were thinking about. You have to actually click on the little moving person, who then freezes and a paragraph or two of information appears at the right hand side of the page.
While reading the text, additional unlabelled icons appear at the far right. These lead to additional links, further reading, and other items. To scroll within longer pieces of the text, use the skinny bar with a grey rectangle in it at the right of the text.
