The Bottom Line
Sky Express flies from its base in Crete to almost anywhere in the Greek islands by charter, and also offers scheduled flights as well, many of them out of Heraklion or Sitia on the island of Crete. It serves Athens and Thessaloniki as well. As of December, 2009, it has also handled some PSO (Public Service Obligation) flights to some island locations.
Pros
- Arranging your own charter flight for a small group can be surprisingly affordable.
- Their rates on scheduled flights are competitive.
- May be very helpful when other airlines are on strike - it may not affect them.
Cons
- The planes are new but small 19 seaters, with prop engines rather than jets.
- Luggage allowances are miserly due to small plane size.
- Not a very light packer? You will probably be paying overweight luggage fees at 3 Euro per kilo.
Description
- The founder and sometimes captain on some routes used to be the personal pilot for the Prime Minister, Georges Papandreou.
- Bear in mind that some Olympic Airlines flights to the islands were also in smaller prop planes; island airports are small.
- Flight times are about the same as jet aircraft over short distances.
Guide Review - Sky Express
If you don't mind smaller planes, this airline fills in some schedule gaps for flights from Crete.
