Hostels in Greece offer a cheap place to stay surrounded by interesting footloose travelers. While it may not be for everyone, an occasional night in a cheap hostel can be a great way to extend your Greece travel budget.
A hostel with a built-in bar - that may be enough for some to decide that this Athens hostel is the way to go. Definitely catering to a young, energetic crowd, often in Greece to attend one of the major music festivals.
A central location in the heart of Athens makes this an easy-to-get-to hostel. It also features its own bar. The rooms are plain but you won't spend much time in them. The Aphrodite hostel also offers long-term luggage storage (3 month maximum).
This hostel is located in the Plaka, the old heart of Athens, near the Acropolis, lots of shops, touristy restaurants, and tempting, meandering streets.
Not far from the
National Archaeological Museum, this hostel is in a picturesque old building. The public areas are plain but the rooms are nicely furnished.
Legendary hotel which has created far, far more than its share of wild memories for young visitors to Greece. Reservations recommended, but it's not clear why, as even their website says "No one ever turned away!" Definitely not for the faint of heart
Billing itself as the "most southerly hostel in Europe", this hostel is indeed on the far south coast of Crete, where
nude beaches are abundant and the vibe is very different from the crowded northern coast of Crete. No age limit, beds cost 8 Euro (but a cheaper weekly rate is available) and there is no limit on how long you can stay. There're not many other limits either! Not for the sedate no matter what your age.
Located in the heart of
Rethymno, a colorful small city on the north coast of Crete. Open year-round; bring your own sheets or rent them for an extra Euro per night. Rates start at 7.50 Euro.
Located near the black-sand beach of Perissa with bus service to the other areas of the island, this well-run hostel on Santorini is quieter than some of its kin elsewhere. Open only during the late spring, summer, and early fall.
This campground provides cheap lodging if you have your own gear; if not you can rent a tent. There are bungalows available as well. Is Ios as wild as they say? Here's what
one reader experienced.
Don't be put off by the word "resort" - beds here start as low as 10 Euro in one of the beach cabins. They do offer private rooms at a higher cost, and, at the other end, tents for 8 Euro. Even the tents are big sturdy ones with beds, not crawl-in types. It's right on the renowned Mykonos beach, with a variety of water sports available at extra cost. This just may be the best-value hostel in Greece.
