St. George Lycabettus Hotel

About.com Rating 3.5

By , About.com Guide

The Bottom Line
One of the signature hotels of Athens, the St. George Lycabettus was remodeled and renovated in 2004.
Pros
  • Highly-trained staff
  • Beautifully furnished rooms
  • Rates include breakfast, which is often not the case at upscale hotels.
  • Off-season rates and specials are surprisingly affordable, as low as 105 Euro for a single.
  • The hotel offers 154 rooms and suites.
Cons
  • Located a bit off the beaten path, which may not be a "con" at all.
  • Minimum two-night stay
  • Minimum check-in age is 18.
  • Facade is off-putting, typical 1960s construction.
  • Some rooms are small; Acropolis view rooms cost more.
Description
  • A small rooftop swimming pool provides views of Athens and also offers a poolside bar.
  • Small pets are allowed.
  • They frequently offer special discount packages for holidays.
  • The St. George is included in most on-line booking services - check for the best rates, as they vary widely.
  • Looking for the King George instead of the Saint George? That's a different hotel, located on Syntagma Square.
Guide Review - St. George Lycabettus Hotel
The St. George Lycabettus Boutique Hotel in the exclusive Kolonaki area of Athens has served visitors to Greece for decades. The word "Boutique" has been recently added as Greece rushes to embrace the concept of luxurious hotels which may not have huge lobbies or other facilities, something that used to count against hotels in the old Greek rating system.

The present ambiance runs the gamut from a more classical look in some of the meeting rooms to highly contemporary furnishings in the guest rooms. The eclecticism works in some areas, but seems a bit overwhelming or accidental in others. The clientele includes plenty of foreign travelers, but also Greek expatriates and those with business in the capital.

Le Grand Balcon offers rooftop drinks and dining with a gorgeous, though somewhat distant, view of the Parthenon. Frame, the other restaurant in the hotel, caters to a hipper crowd. Well, maybe not hip - is the "Beers and Burgers" special on Saturday afternoons really "hip"? Burgers aside, the cuisine at Frame is contemporary international, focusing on fish and healthier cuisine.

Another new addition in keeping with the "boutique" concept is the Sensia Spa, providing spa services and gym equipment for guests, definitely an innovation catering mainly to the fitness-addicted foreign visitor who needs to work out on a vacation. There is also a steam bath.
