The basic room I had was pleasant, a bit on the small size for an American-style hotel, but with a very comfortable bed and fine percale sheets and pillowcases.
The Athens Ledra Marriott definitely caters to the business traveler, with what amounts to a small souvenir shop above the honor bar, including dolls, small ceramics, and other items perfect for the harried executive who has to have something in the suitcase for a child or spouse. Still, so many items with pricetags made me feel a little like I was living in a display case. While I was out sightseeing, a small food item I put into the honor bar refrigerator to chill was removed and a note was left suggesting I contact the front desk if I wanted a refrigerator for my own use in the room. I don't mind the note but putting my food out to potentially spoil didn't feel particularly welcoming. Surely I could have been given a first-time warning instead?
The hotel offers a free shuttle service to a location near Syntagma Square, which is virtually essential since the streets directly around the Athens Ledra are not particularly walkable. There's nothing wrong with them in particular - just busy downtown streets with nothing particularly picturesque about them. On my bus, the driver was a native English speaker but was the quiet type - he did not provide any information on what to do or where to go for the first-time visitors getting off the bus and looking around in obvious confusion, and I ended up with several followers when I announced I knew the way to the Acropolis. No one expected the driver to be a tour guide, but "Go right at the next corner" would have been helpful, since the stopping spot was on a side street with no obvious landmarks.
A pre-booked taxi was trouble-free despite the 4:45 am pick-up time, and checking out was smooth and easy.
